Bo Dabi

Welcome! I am a New York City based photographer with a focus in travel, nature, and commercial subjects. Most of my images feature landscapes (including cityscapes) or wildlife, and a significant subset of my portfolio was shot underwater. After Midnight showcases nighttime images, including astrophotography and photos of the moon. Cabinet of Curiosities is a collection of quirky and macabre subjects, abandoned places, and roadside oddities. I’m not sure what compels a person to get into the water with sharks and crocodiles, or to stand for hours on a bluff waiting for a lightning strike, or to go back to the same spot night after night to witness the rising Milky Way in the night sky. Why would someone drive twelve hours to photograph a vintage motel in the Mojave desert, or a quaint covered bridge in the peak of autumn foliage? I think I’ll do a better job showing you rather than trying to explain.

Contact me for prints, assignment, licensing, and boutique services. My YouTube Channel focuses on the “experience” of photography and takes you behind the scenes to see how images are made. You can also read about techniques, gear, and stories in my blog. When there’s not a camera in hand, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing guitar, and reading. If you’d like to know more or just want to say hello, please use the form on this page to contact me. Thanks for stopping by!

GEAR

I frequently am asked about photographic equipment and what gear I recommend. On a typical photoshoot I’ll pack 1-2 camera bodies, 2-3 lenses, a tripod, and a filter or two. Each item below is either presently or previously in my camera bag, and I only list items that I believe to be of high quality or value (the primary purpose for each item is also noted). I receive a commission when you use the links below and make a purchase — it costs you nothing additional and helps to support this site.

Usually it’s the photographers with very pricey equipment that like to say “gear doesn’t matter” … I won’t lie to you: it does matter. That said, an unskilled person with top gear probably won’t produce great images. Technique, practice, patience, and creativity are much more influential in the final outcome than gear.
